Attorney Paul Twomey

Attorney Paul Twomey has won awards for his work in both criminal law and law related to elections and voting. For his decades of work as a criminal defense attorney, he has received the "Defender of Liberty Award', given annually by the New Hampshire Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. For his work on the Phone Jamming case that arose out of the 2002 US Senate race, Attorney Twomey has received the "Dunfey-Kanteris Award" given by the NH Democratic Party.  In 2008, he was requested to provide testimony on this case to the Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives. 

He has worked in the criminal defense field since 1977, serving in a variety of capacities including as a trial attorney for Wisconsin Indian Legal Services, trial attorney and Litigation Director for the New Hamsphire Public Defenders. He was also one of the first two attorneys in the Homicide Defense Project of the NH Public Defenders and has tried scores of murder cases including a successful defense of a death penalty case (State v. Pfaff) and the case of the State of New Hampshire v Pamela Smart.  He defended what the Justice Department called the largest commercial bribery case ever brought in the United States in a case involving automobile executives at Honda .

In the election law field, Attorney Twomey has litigated cases involving mid term redistricting for the NH Democratic Party, ballot access on behalf of the Libertarian Party, and a precedent setting case concerning fair ordering of candidates on ballots on behalf of Republican, Democratic and Independant candidates. He is a former School Board Chair and currently serves on the Judicial Selection Commission for the State of New Hampshire. He was New Hampshire State Counsel for the Obama Presidential Campaign in both the NH Primary and the General Election of 2008, supervising close to 1,000 lawyers in the voter protection effort, and previously served as State Counsel for the presidential campaign of Howard Dean and as Deputy State Counsel for the Kerry/Edwards Campaign.

Attorney Twomey is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Wisconsin Law School. He is admitted to practice in NH state and federal courts, the Federal First Circuit of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
